You can definitely call this one a comeback. Having survived a near-death bout with hepatitis C, Austin ace singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo isn't merely back to form with The Boxing Mirror - he's actually better than ever. Of course, it helps working with such talented collaborators as his game-raising poet partner Kim Christoff and skilful producer John Cale, who proves to be just the man to straighten out Escovedo's electric/acoustic conundrum. The Boxing Mirror rocks raunchy when it should and gets positively orchestral when necessary, and the two impulses never seem to be in conflict. At last, everything Escovedo does well is represented on a single disc. Alejandro Escovedo? Rules.
