Album reviews Music

Alfie

Rating: NNN

Some people may be shocked to learn that Mick Jagger collaborated with Dave Stewart to come up with a suitable soundtrack for an ill-advised remake of the Michael Caine classic Alfie, but the real surprise is that the music doesn’t suck. In fact, Jagger’s songs Old Habits Die Hard and Blind Leading The Blind are his best work in years. Even the incidental bits where he’s moaning wordlessly top anything on his horrible Goddess In The Doorway album. Soul-belting upstart Joss Stone appears on a couple of tunes and takes a crack at the title theme, but this is really Jagger’s show. His numbers are rife with the sort of insight into Alfie Elkins’s character that could only belong to someone who’s been there and done that. Marvy. TP
