Alkaline Trio

It’s interesting to see what’s happening to all the little pop-punk clone bands out there as they struggle to grow up and remain relevant. While Alkaline Trio ride predictable rhythms and riffs, they also work with pianos, catchy choruses, interesting phrasing and serious 80s new wave inflections, à la Depeche Mode. Obviously, this won’t excite anyone other than overgrown skate punks or whatever it is those kids are riding these days, and the lyrics are seriously whiny and quite awful. For god’s sake, will somebody take these kids to Disneyland and cheer ’em up? Y’know, show ’em life isn’t all about dead bodies and losing faith in everything.
