ALTER EGO

Rating: NNNN

It’s been three years since Alter Ego destroyed dance floors the world over with their electro-house anthem Rocker. Why Not?! stays on that aggressive fist-pumping path and offers a few candidates for a sequel.

The distorted synth leads and crunchy drums are still here, as are the big pop hooks hidden under the noise. The mood, however, is more playful and occasionally a bit silly.

The bits that make you giggle as you wiggle are the 80s arcade game sounds that fill the album, characterized by the exaggerated portamento used on almost every track. It’s hard to say why, but those long slides between notes make everything sound like cartoon techno. You can almost see the anvils falling. Whether you like it depends on whether you like to chuckle while you shuffle.
