Starting your album with a sprawling, riff-heavy instrumental called Yoga Means Union is not the best way to embrace a new audience. But just when you think this NYC quartet is going to ride another rambling riff into the sunset, they toss a shuffling, McCartney-esque tune into the mix and any assumptions that these cats are difficult, uncommercial art rockers go straight down the toilet. The guitars sparkle, the drums boom and the vocals are impassioned without sounding overcooked. More importantly, this band understands that rock music doesn’t have to sound tough to be effective. An enjoyable listen.
Ambulance LTD hit the Mod Club Saturday (April 16).
