AMER DIAB

AMER DIAB The Year Of The Apology (independent) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Yet another example of how impossible it is to make an indie album in this city without incorporating at least a fraction of Broken Social Scene. Local singer/songwriter Amer Diab recruits BSS stalwarts Brendan Canning and Andrew Whiteman among others for a debut that evokes crying in your beer and smoking rollies at the Matador when most sane people are asleep under their duvets. The resonant spaghetti western/surf guitar accents are lovely, and you’ve gotta tap your spurs to Dean Stone’s galloping drums. The tunes are all pretty much break-up ballads and done-wrong songs, which suits me fine – any good cowboy knows to sing the pain away. Amer Diab launches The Year Of The Apology at the Rivoli Friday (November 5).
