AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD Source Tags & Codes (Dreamworks/Universal) Rating: NN Rating: NN
For a group notorious for leaving their equipment in a pile of rubble onstage and being banned from most clubs in their hometown of Austin, And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead sound shockingly placid on their major-label debut. Perhaps the jokes about the Texas foursome having to be told by their new big-label bosses that proper songs, not noise, were expected are true. Trail of Dead do occasionally raise a ruckus on Source Tags & Codes, but overall the screaming is kept to a minimum in favour of weepy emo songs and tedious prog jams. That might have worked if they had some real songs. Sadly, though, the jarring loud/soft party trick wears thin halfway through this 45-minute dud. Back to the smashing, boys. Trail of Dead play Lee's Palace March 16.
