ANDRE WILLIAMS & THE NEW ORLEANS HELLHOUNDS Can You Deal With It? (Bloodshot) Rating: NN
There's a fine line between greasy grooves and sloppy ones. Andre Williams, the dynamic dirty old man of tail-feather-shaking R&B, likes his jams greasy like his chicken. But the Crescent City crew of garage-reared acolytes with whom he's presently saddled have a tendency to bumble and rumble into sloppy territory and seem blissfully unaware of it.
There's no doubt Williams knows that Can You Deal With It? ain't all tight and right, but at this late stage in his colourful career he's more concerned with getting paid on delivery for completed recordings while he's still breathing than with who's gonna buy the album once it hits stores. As with everything this crazed genius touches, it has its moments of twisted inspiration, but there's only so much Williams can do himself. More trash than flash.
