Album reviews Music

Andrew Kenny of American Analog Set

Rating: NNNNN

Breathy-voiced singer/songwriter for the Austin-based Arts & Crafts-signed indie pop stalwarts who bring their latest disc, Set Free, to the Horseshoe Sunday (November 13).

Songs of Green Pheasant

“People probably think I go crazy over this kind of super-mellow, reverbed-out, home-recorded singer/songwriter record, though I usually don’t. What makes this my favourite release of the fall is the outstanding songwriting. Oh, and if you like this, I’ve got a Nyles Lannon disc you’ll go crazy for, too.”

Broken Social Scene

“Loving You Forgot It In People as I did, I didn’t know what to expect from this record. There were so many things I didn’t want it to be (straight-up rock, YFIIP part 2 or major letdown) that it didn’t occur to me that it might just be incredible on its own. The weirdest songs have defined edges that give them life, and the best songs are presented in a way that make them art and not product. It’s amazing, and as it turns out, it really is all gonna break.”

Death Cab for Cutie – Plans

“This album has a few of my favourite DCFC songs on it. The production might pop too many wheelies, but I can still hear Ben on the edge of his bed writing most of these songs. Nick’s face goes on the side of the trailer, though. After having his bass trampled on Transatlanticism, it’s back to pro bowl form. “
