ANDY SWAN

Rating: NNN

Finally, a record about spine-tingling parliamentary politics, ice skating to work and those perennial playoff-chokers the Sens. Actually Andy Swan’s Ottawa mentions none of these. Furthermore, he lives and works in Toronto. It’s more about the experience of recording this earnest and cathartic second solo outing for the leader of the Michael Parks.

Joined by his capital city buddies, Acorn’s Rolf Klausener, John J. Higney of the Two Minute Miracles and Jim Bryson among others, Swan creates a countrified communal celebration, exercising emotionally draining relationship demons hinted at in the gentle aching of You Got The Diamonds (I Got The Shaft). The Truth About Thieves sneaks away from the recurring indie-gone-rustic tone with a Loving Spoonfuls heap of Rickenbacker-guitar 60s pop. Ottawa never sounded so warm.

Andy Swan gets down at the Dakota Tavern tonight (Thursday, December 6).
