ANTIPOP CONSORTIUM Arrhythmia (Warp/Outside) Rating: NNNN
Rating: NNNN
Maybe New York blip-hop crew Antipop Consortium’s surprise signing with electronic imprint Warp makes sense after all. After dabbling in electronics in the past, the trio finally gets the mix right on an album where the beats are as messed up as their rhymes. Straightforward neck-snapping is abandoned for inspired collisions between live jams and bleeping laptop rockers and a tune built around a sample of a ping-pong game. Arrhythmia probably isn’t going to blow up big in Brooklyn, but it is genuinely unique, which is more than you can say for most hiphop records today.
