APHEX TWIN Drukqz (Warner) Rating: NN
Evidently, word of Tom Waits' bootleg-leveraged release of his stolen Alice score has reached Richard James. The man known as Aphex Twin (among numerous other aliases) has decided to commercially issue the studio demos he's been working on for the past five years, rather than wait for his missing MP3 sound files to turn up on the Net. AFX fans will no doubt take the two-disc Drukqz download of James's bedroom dabbling as a godsend, but it's not the sort of "next level shit" that you count on from a new Aphex Twin release. There are a few flashes of the engaging wit and whimsy so rare in experimental music. A better editing job would've made this seem less like self-indulgent twaddle.
