The adorable Finnish hair-farming cellists who brought us 1996’s Metallica covers disc Plays Metallica By Four Cellos and 1998’s Inquisition Symphony, featuring Pantera and Faith No More covers and a few originals, eschew covers altogether for this self-titled offering, so nothing here has the same appeal of familiarity. Fine cellists, these guys are at their best when sticking to an entirely instrumental repertoire. The stilted, trite sentimentality of the heavy metal lyrics on the few vocal tracks, for which they’ve brought in singers Ville Valo and Lauri Ylonen, can probably be partly blamed on the language barrier. They brilliantly blend heavy, shredding guitars and rock rhythms with soaring symphonic sounds. But you have to be a bit of a rocker to get into this. OK, probably a lot of a rocker. And not just the kind who appreciates Metallica and Faith No More.

Apocalyptica rock the Opera House Wednesday (March 16).
