ARMS AND SLEEPERS Black Paris 86 (Expect Candy) Rating: NN
Jazzy lounge house had its heyday about 10 years ago, which makes Boston duo Arms and Sleepers more than a little late for the party. Presently, people in search of the cutting edge of ambient techno-pop have wisely moved over to the shoegazer-noir stylings of Germany's Ulrich Schnauss.
Black Paris 86 isn't a wasteland, but more like a musical bridge to nowhere - mildly pleasing soundscapes that play like Portishead outtakes circa 1998. While the duo's live show features some trippy visuals, there's no escaping the fact that their music is a time machine back to one of the worst epochs in recent musical memory.
Arms and Sleepers play the Horseshoe Wednesday (August 20).
