Though their name evokes your typical multiple-word-name emo band, San Diego’s As I Lay Dying are totally metalcore, with all the requisite qualifiers. Lung-busting screaming: check. Arpeggiated guitars racing against one another: check. Speedy double-bass drumming: check. Indistinguishable lyrics: check. Since the sound follows metalcore convention so closely, we might be inclined to rely on the songwriting to hold our interest. Sadly, the distinctions between tracks are so fine, this record could be one long, painfully boring song.
