This is a little confusing. I was comfortable with the Ashley MacIsaac who was that fiddler with an odd proclivity for making an ass of himself whenever possible. Now he's put the fiddle away and made a friggin' pop/rock record. As far as Canrock goes (which, let's face it, is mostly shite though we all try to support it), Pride -- which I'm told isn't about gay pride but Canadian pride -- isn't bad. MacIsaac's voice isn't annoying, and the lyrics are okay. While some tracks are kinda dumb, even the Ramones-ish High Times Livin', which appears to be about a chick (but isn't he gay?), could be worse. And really, he'll look like less of a tool whipping it out onstage as a rock 'n' roller than he did playing the fiddle.
MacIsaac runs amok at Hugh's Room Saturday (November 26).
