It's a wonder that a band of Athlete's stature (at least in Britain) gets away with such a schizophrenic sound. Over the span of three albums, they've moved from pop to wuss rock and finally to indie atmospheric. At least they're moving in the right direction, which is away from the Coldplay-inspired pop of Tourist.
Beyond The Neighbourhood isn't Athlete's triumph, but with far more rock moments, spacey sounds and well-placed hooks, as on the driving anthem Hurricane and the dreamy Airport Disco, they've redeemed themselves a little.
Athlete play Lee's Palace November 6.
