The liner notes of this compilation acknowledge that it's a reissue, but they don't tell you that what was originally a two-CD set is now trimmed to one. Law & Auder Records originally released Avantgardism back in the early 90s, when drum 'n' bass was jazzy and complicated, before the mechanical tech-step thing took over. Some of the so-called ethnic samples don't stand the test of time, but most of it's listenable. Too bad Everything But the Girl started dabbling in drum 'n' bass and scared everybody off the style. In spite of the coffee-shop-friendly vibe, it wasn't any cheesier than the current sci-fi obsession. The Bedouin Ascent track makes me crave the days when you had to concentrate to dance to d 'n' b.
