Baby Dee’s Drake debut Wednesday (February 6) should be memorable. Rating: NNN
Man? Woman? Beast? Baby Dee has one of those none-of-the-above voices and the sort of off-kilter delivery you only need to hear once for it to be burned into your brain for good. Just minutes into the Will Oldham-produced Safe Inside The Day, it’s easy to understand why people like Marc Almond and David Tibet are so effusive in their praise for Baby Dee’s darkly twisted cabaret: they know a fellow outsider working from their own rulebook when they hear one.
Although, after hearing Baby Dee’s harp and accordion moves, it seems that Cleveland’s unlikeliest new star of the blogosphere has been cribbing from David Thomas’s playbook. To be fair to the concertina-squeezing Pere Ubu main man, however, Baby Dee is obviously much more enamoured of bacon.
