Right, so I actually remember writing about the last Babyshambles album, wondering how a mess like Pete Doherty can still do anything musical - something that, shockingly, I'm even more perplexed about now.
So fine. He's got a big, mushy ball of four-leaf clovers wedged up his rump or something, because as lucky as he's been (he's not dead yet), his band seems equally so.
What stands out is their consistency in writing smart but accessible music - both catchy and competent, as on songs like Delivery. Nation still relies heavily on an unpolished, admirably sloppy-ish garage-rock approach that sounds like the product of some lost scene, decades removed.
But that's what makes it all so right. It's a record full of straight-up good songs from a band that should be (and would be, except for Doherty's fuckery) much more important than it is.
