At this point the Bad Brains have absolutely nothing to lose. So if Beastie Boy Adam Yauch says he wants to learn what it's like to produce an album and Megaforce is keen to put it out, they're all in.
From the boombox-in-a-garage sound of Build A Nation, it seems Yauch needs a few more sessions to get the hang of the whole crazy mixing desk thing, but as a long-time Bad Brains fan, at least he knows how great they once were and could possibly be again.
His problem comes from trying to turn the clock back to their golden era, when they used to shift effortlessly from a raging hardcore assault into a cloudy-cool reggae groove and back again. Theoretically, it might seem like a good idea to revisit that era, and the Bad Brains can still blast with ferocity, but the jarring changes in tone and tempo could prove more of a problem than the lo-fi production for many listeners.
The Bad Brains join the Roots at the Fort York Picnic July 29.
