Trying to recapture the pre-fame thrill of creation, Damon Gough returns to collaborating with long-time pal Andy Votel, who constructs One Plus One Is One around simple piano progressions. Unfortunately, Gough’s orchestrational ambitions outstrip their combined arrangement abilities, and the two clearly think too much alike to keep each other in check when a judgment call is required on whether a flute strays too far into embarrassing Jethro Tull territory, or to assess the unitentionally comical downside of hiring a children’s choir. Some pleasant tunes, but we’ve come to expect more.
