It was bound to happen. Sooner or later some disenchanted Americana band would note the cult success of the Yacht Rock online series and classic rock radio's seemingly endless appetite for 70s gold and try to cash in by turning up the smooth.
At some point, Band of Horses must've realized that being the poor man's My Morning Jacket wasn't going to keep them in flannel, so for Cease To Begin they've softened their approach, strengthened the melodic component of their compositions, tightened up the harmonies and cranked up the repetition of catchphrases.
The result is a uniformly pleasant selection of peaceful, easy feelings that wouldn't sound out of place sandwiched between the similarly smooth tunes of Loggins & Messina, America, Gerry Rafferty and, yes, Christopher Cross. The new high-water mark of contemporary yacht rock.
Band of Horses hit the Phoenix November 9.
