Beats for Beginners are a Manchester-based electro-rock group who garnered a substantial amount of praise in the UK press when this was released there last year. If you've been wondering what those Kill All DJs posters are about, it's a teaser campaign for this album. Those are both reasons to hate a band, but these guys aren't that bad. Evoking the dance rock of the Madchester era but with a softer classic rock touch, they've got a good ear for a hook, and the production is detailed and lush without going over the top. Unfortunately, the lyrics would sound more at home delivered in an ironic deadpan electroclash way than as heartfelt pop songs - i.e., they're not funny in the way the band hopes.
