Assembled by Colin Linden – who also recently put together a similar appreciation of Johnny Cash’s music – Beautiful is just the sort of painfully earnest homage to Canuck folk icon Gordon Lightfoot you would expect from the participating cast of worshipful acolytes. On hand to sing his tunes are Ron Sexsmith, Murray McLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn, Cowboy Junkies, Harry Manx, the Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo and others. It would’ve been great to have, say, Buck 65 break down The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald, but not here. Everyone’s so in awe of Lightfoot that they’re reluctant to put too much of themselves in the music for fear of appearing less than reverent. How very Canadian.
