Because You’re Funky (Lo Recordings) Rating: NNN
Rating: NNN
Another UK collection of ridiculously rare funk joints compiled from dusty 45s belonging to noted Brit beat dealer the Rustler. No, it’s not a nutty Luke Vibert handle, but rather the alias of a former A.R. Kane guitarist which makes his desire for annonymity totally understandable. That should also explain why the tunes here — ranging from stomping R&B to scalding psych-funk — seem to have been selected for their intriguing guitar features rather than the cool breaks or bumpin’ beats you get from DJ-assembled jobs. Swales is no historian and lacks the impetus to seek info on the artists (he might have to pay royalties), so you won’t get the lowdown on amazing unknowns like Davy Jr. & Guess Who, Jerry & the Medicine Men and the Soulful Two. Still, a killer party mix for your hully-gullying pleasure. TP
