After hearing a sampling of the irreverently experimental remixes of tracks from Beck’s Guero album prior to the disc’s release, I have to admit that Beck’s relatively bland studio versions were a huge let-down. Perhaps Beck (or his business manager) made the same observation, because he’s wisely released a selection of some of the better retouches as Guerolito. The creative tweaking provided by the Beastie Boys’ Ad-Rock, Mario Caldato Jr., Boards of Canada, 8bit, Air, Homelife, the Dust Brothers and Subtle doesn’t just enhance what Beck put down – it’s a clear improvement. The best work is contributed by Nick Diamonds and his Islands crew on Qué Onda Guero and by th’ Corn Gangg on Emergency Exit. It’s good enough to render Guero obsolete.
