Being lumped in with the whole trip-hop thing might've been great for Belleruche if people still cared about Portishead. But that ship has sailed, and any associations with the momentarily popular Bristol sound that were once advantageous are now more a liability.
On The Express, Belleruche stick by the basic brooding-chanteuse-with-bluesy-beats formula, clearly having realized that the sexy/soulful voice of Kathrin deBoer is the group's greatest asset. However, they've wisely downplayed the dated use of turntable scratching and the whole sample component, while approaching the material with an altogether funkier attitude that should serve them well on the dance floor and beyond.
