When Eminem came out, his songs were shock-oriented and sensationalist, but his compelling, clever lyrics showed an ease with humour and wordplay. In D12 member Bizarre’s stupid video for the Eminem-by-numbers beat comedy rap Rock Star, Slim’s fat shower-cap-sporting buddy bites Em’s formula (the “wacky” clown of rap with a poker face, self-deprecating yet extremely offensive at the same time). But since Bizarre is so, so wack, there’s no substance behind it. He just slams you over the head with jokes about AIDS, VD, incest, rape, statutory rape, misogyny and sex with animals. They’re not even jokes, just references – like “Hey, I’ve got VD.” Not funny, and I usually enjoy perverted shit. This disc is scarily directed at Slim Shady’s new two-to-eight-year-old target market. (Protect your kids.) Thank god Dre knows where to draw the line.
