Black Feelings

Rating: NNN

Rising from the ashes of Les Angles Mort via Montreal’s underground cassette tape scene, Black Feelings take the listener on a moody death march through gothy, psychedelic, post-punk sounds. Despite the trio’s ability to wield super-heavy riffs and mix influences, they have problems sounding fresh.

Opener Lost Rings Pt. 1 shows tons of promise in an epic verse but loses us in the apathetic, gutter-punk-inspired chorus. Hidden Dance is essentially a retread of Radiohead’s Optimistic, while Gails mimics No Age’s pretty, instrumental noisescapes. Things get better with garage rocker Golden Children, which features a cool hypno-tribal chorus.

But the best song comes near the end, when they effectively channel shoegaze on the sinister yet spacey VH135. It’s got a sweet chorus that’s a must-listen for fans of Secret Shine or Serena Maneesh.
