Blackie & the Rodeo Kings

Blackie & the Rodeo Kings Bark (True North) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Here’s a Canadian country rock supergroup involving Colin Linden, Stephen Fearing and Tom Wilson that plays the kind of songs bar fights were made for, mixed with the kind of songs you listened to when you got dumped and headed to the bar to get drunk and listen to music that made you want to fight. Here, they follow up the Juno-winning Kings Of Love album with a swell mix of ballads and rockabilly stompers. While not wholly original, it is very well played and beautifully recorded. What holds the record back is the decision to switch lead singers for every song. While each member of the band has a unique voice, they never get a proper vibe going.

Catch Blackie & the Rodeo Kings at the Toronto Bluesfest (Exhibition Place) July 26 and Taste Of The Danforth August 10.
