If you're getting a strong Band vibe from Canadian roots rock supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, it's no accident. The twangin' triumvirate of Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson recorded Let's Frolic in Bearsville, New York, at the famed barn/studio where the Band tracked Music From Big Pink back in 68. Garth Hudson even shows up on the album. But Linden, Wilson and Fearing make their own distinct impressions, and it's cool that they don't let their egos compromise the songwriting process, giving everyone equal time. Linden, who produced, gets plenty of bluesy guitar bits, while Wilson lays the baritone-voiced pub rock on thick. But if I had to play favourites, the real shivers come from Fearing's frail vocals and delicate songwriting. BARK do a two-night stand at the Horseshoe September 28 and 29.
