BLESS Platinumberg: The Movement (DKD) Rating: NNN

It’s no surprise that Montreal MC Bless was swept up by Guru and DJ Premier as the Canadian representatives of their faltering GangStarr Family. Many of the beats on the awkwardly titled Platinumberg: The Movement sound as though they were lifted directly from Primo’s sampler, and Bless himself holds his own on the two tracks featuring Guru. Unfortunately, when that influence wanes, Bless loses focus, trotting out R&B-tinged filler and generic tales of struggle. The a cappella rhyme dropped midway through shows that Bless has enough talent to make the ordinary sound extraordinary, but he can’t seem to hold it over 18 tracks. As with most other recent hiphop records, quantity rather than quality wins out here.
