Did anyone hear RJD2’s second album? It sounded like a fucking hour-long Nissan commercial. Which is why I’m so pleased that Blockhead’s evolution on his sophomore disc, following up the chilled masterwork that was Music By Cavelight, has solely been artistic. Co-producer Damien Paris thickens a few of his sample-intenstive progressive rap instrumentals with guitar, bass and drums, but all of the Aesop Rock producer’s multi-tracked touchstones are still prominent: twisted but melodious orchestral samples and dementedly innocent voices snipped from dusty times passed.
