It’s not entirely fair to compare a musician’s recent work with what he did 20 years ago, but that impulse is hard to ignore. Body Of Song isn’t Hüsker Dü and it isn’t Sugar, the projects Bob Mould is best known for it just doesn’t feel as vital. Though Mould is moving away from the electronic experiments of his recent solo work, some dated-sounding blips and bleeps still linger along with vocal effects that were played out five years ago. Fortunately, these collar-tugging moments don’t rule the record, and there’s some fine guitar pop enlivened by Mould’s pleasantly froggy voice, which might inspire you to pogo or to ponder.
