Album reviews Music

Bob Wiseman

Rating: NNNN

Let’s make this simple: if you’ve ever liked a Bob Wiseman album, you’ll love this. If, on the other hand, you hate the off-key singing, amateurish production and disconcerting contrast between the silly songs and the sad ones, you’ll probably dislike this just as much as any of his other solo records. I’m on the first team, so I’m charmed by the playful bits and get shivers from the heartbreaking narratives. I’m still annoyed by the dismal recording quality and flimsy packaging, but those are minor complaints in the Bob Wiseman universe. At least there’s a lyric sheet.

Wiseman plays the Fat Albert’s benefit at Steelworkers Hall Friday (May 27) and hits the Rivoli Tuesday (May 31).
