Christmas is never without its nightmares, and Bootsy Collins’s holiday album is a twisted funk journey that should rattle you to your very core. N-Yo-City finds the Parliament bassist talkin’ funky jive in a stream of consciousness with Christmas-related phrases mixed in (‘Naughty or nice… I say it twice, naughty or nice… love all over the world!’) over a freaky Parliament funk bounce. On heavily funkdafied Jingle Bellz, he calls himself Booty Claus, while on the funked-out Happy Holidaze, Snoop doesn’t even mention Christmas. But that’s just typical of this over-the-top seasonal album with low production values full of exaggerated funk and Bootsy’s smooth, speaking voice, urging you to get funky. Amazingly, even with friends in high places assisting (Zapp Troutman, Fred Wesley, George Clinton), this is really horrible.
