Boundary

Rating: NNNN

Montreal producer/DJ Ghislain Poirier has adopted new pseudonym Boundary for work that falls outside the futuristic re-imaginings of dancehall and soca rhythms he’s best known for.

While billed as being explicitly inspired by 90s IDM and classic minimal techno, Boundary doesn’t actually sound very retro. However, if you’ve been following Poirier since his early experimental ambient recordings, you will recognize this as having much more in common with his own beginnings as an artist than his more familiar party sounds.

What sets this new material apart from the 90s electronic music he’s referencing are the traces of everything he’s been doing in more recent years. The beats and tempos are often reminiscent of his tropical-inspired work, and an organic warmth and fluidity sets it outside the mechanical precision we generally associate with experimental techno. It still qualifies as “intelligent dance music,” but unlike most IDM, you can actually dance to this.
