This colourfully titled dance/pop rock act at first brings to mind fellow Torontonians Slit Slot, as Boy Ballz feature a similar ultra-hetero reverse-electroclash vibe as well as bombastic yet obviously playful stabs all over the musical map. BB twist the formula even further, fusing new wave and glam rock into a two-headed beast with rap for a rump. For this kind of self-indulgence to succeed, you need a combination of hilarity and radness. Alas, shoddy, half-spoken nods to AC/DC’s Big Balls on top of circus music achieve neither hilarity nor radness. Yet Boy Ballz manage to entertain themselves the next step is to entertain others. That said, they’re surprisingly adept players as well as being obvious horn-dogs, a formula that worked well for a little group called Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Boy Ballz play Friday (January 21) at the Silver Dollar (486 Spadina).
