Boys Night Out

Rating: NNN

Based on a short story by guitarist Jeff Davis, Trainwreck is an ambitious undertaking for the Burlington band that’s currently enjoying serious international success, including a headlining slot at the Warped Tour’s Smart Punk (huh?) stage. The album is bookended by two instrumental and spoken-word narratives that give the whole package a kinda conceptual mental illness/murder vibe. Much of Trainwreck sounds like a mash-up of hardcore and post-rock, and the band avoids predictability with plenty of jerky start-stops and tempo changes. It’s an album full of good ideas, but the Boys have bitten off a bit more than they can chew.

Boys Night Out join the Warped Tour in Molson Park Saturday (July 30).
