BRANT BJORK AND THE BROS

Rating: NNNNN

The post-Kyuss recordings of Brant Bjork have never lived up to his previous work, for much the same reason that Josh Homme’s Queens of the Stone Age still aren’t clicking. Neither of them is focusing on their strength, which for Bjork is bashing drums, while for Homme it’s knocking out down-tuned guitar riffs.

The problem is that they both fancy themselves singer/songwriters even if they haven’t developed the requisite skills. After five solo records, two more with the Bros and thousands of miles of roadwork, Bjork finally sounds like he’s getting the hang of the whole guitar-strumming frontman thing, but listening to him sensitively croon away on Somera Sól is a bit like watching Michael Jordan in the batter’s box.

Brant Bjork’s at the El Mocambo tonight (Thursday, June 7) at midnight.
