The image on the back of Life Short Call Now is of a nuclear Scud penetrating Planet Earth like a pin popping a balloon. Apparently, this won't be the album where Bruce Cockburn lightens up on the politics. That's probably for the best, as few other Canadian artists have been as dedicated to raising awareness. And while many write songs about Iraq from lush recording studios, Cockburn is the type who gets on a plane to see the quagmire first-hand on a fact-finding mission. His souvenir is This Is Baghdad, a plaintive postcard that hits as deep as Cockburn's unmistakable baritone voice. It'll be a sad day if he ever throws in the towel.
