Long-time fans of Bruce Springsteen overjoyed to hear the Boss has reunited with the E Street Band may want to hold off on the celebrations. The boys are definitely back together, but they didn't return to rock on The Rising. It's a relentlessly downbeat set of string-heavy melancholia and dark desperation. How bleak? Well, Springsteen's 9/11 meditation, My City Of Ruins, is the most uplifting tune here. The lone glimmer of light comes with the mid-tempo Let's Be Friends, but even that bears a caveat in the chorus: "Good times have a way of coming to an end." Who knows? A collection of slow, depressing songs might work for Springsteen, but it seems like the time for mourning has already passed.
