BUILD AN ARK

Rating: NNNNN

Continuing to lay new stones on the solid foundation laid by Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Build an Ark’s latest release, Dawn, confirms that 2004’s Peace With Every Step wasn’t a mere happy accident due to some planetary alignment.

Once again, Carlos Niöo’s gigantic multi-national and intergenerational spritual jazz consortium relies on the guiding wisdom and exceptional musical skill of his ringers — namely Phil Ranelin, Nate Morgan, Derf Reklaw, Adam Rudolph and deeply soulful singer Dwight Trible. Since some 30 players were involved in the recording of Dawn, you can’t discount the contributions of all who worked on the marvellous arrangements, the moving compositions and righteous cover choices, like Pharoah Sanders’s You Yourself Are The Key To The Universe.

Album-of-the-year material.
