BUSY SIGNALS

SIGNALS Pure Energy (Sugar Free) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

Pure Energy is essentially a compendium of lost singles tracks and remixes released by “bedroom Bacharach” Howard W. Hamilton III under his Busy Signals alias between his Baby’s First Beats and Pretend Hits albums. Still, it has an appealing do-it-yourself quality that favourably recalls the chart-targeted experiments of Lou Barlow’s Folk Implosion and Beck collaborator Karl Stephenson. Of the five new songs included here, the insanely catchy iBook-created Autopilot — rhymed by pal MC Phonte — is a massive summer R&B hit waiting to happen. Really.
