Butta Babies

Rating: NNNN

While much of the talk about festivals like CMW and NXNE being a band’s big chance to snare a record deal is fantasy, clearly some good can come from these live-music orgies. Montreal hiphop duo Butta Babies nabbed best unsigned band honours at last year’s CMW and poured the money into this four-song EP that arrives just in time for this year’s fest. As always, the focus is on tight beats and conscious rhymes. Understand Yourself features a rhythm that sounds like it’s based around a sped-up tape loop, Man N’ Motion welcomes the return of Toronto MC Motion, and Green Sneakers stutters along beautifully with beats by Nefarius MC Collizhun. The star remains MC Manchilde, however, whose mellow vibe and deft wordplay continue to make him a top Canadian rhymer. Butta Babies play the Comfort Zone tonight (Thursday, March 29).
