What we have in Sessions is a retrospective DJ mix by Detroit legend Carl Craig made up entirely of recordings from his back catalogue. On the two-disc set, you hear an artist who’s been able to forge an identity rooted in experimentation. At the same time, he has also established a specific aesthetic sensibility that transcends the various textures and genres he’s dabbled in over the years.
Even the oldest tracks still sound futuristic and alien, with that spooky but oddly sexy quality the best Detroit techno has always had. The disc ends with a new remix of Bug In The Bass Bin (the track often credited with kick-starting the drum ’n’ bass movement in the UK), which still manages to sound as daring as it did in 1992, and newer productions like his Grammy-nominated remix of the Junior Boys still manage to stand out from the pack.
