Cassandra Wilson Belly Of The Sun (Blue Note) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

In travelling from New York City to reconnect with the blues in Clarksdale, Mississippi, jazz stylist Cassandra Wilson appears to have lost her way. There are a couple of straight-up blues tunes on Belly Of The Sun — You Got To Move, Rock Me Baby and Hot Tamales — and definitely some bluesy ambience, but it’s as if midway through the recording session she got bored with the concept and decided to try adding a samba lilt to a few of her own compositions. Then, for no good reason except to keep her boomer buying public interested, she jazzed up Wichita Lineman and The Weight for inclusion. She’s left with a scattered collection of unrelated tunes held together by the notion that her beautiful voice will make sense of it all. Not quite.
