Cesaria Evora

Cesaria Evora Voz D’Amor ( Bluebird ) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

After going for the crossover market with Cuban danzóns and flamenco pop songs on her most recent discs, Cape Verde’s Barefoot Diva returns to the heartbreaking rural standards that made her a genuine world music star. The production is glossier and the arrangements are bolder, with more clarinet and soprano sax than are probably necessary, but otherwise, Voz D’Amor is strictly roots. Evora sounds positively mournful, and the songs, ranging from country ballads to Bahian weepers, are suitably dramatic.
