Despite trying their darnedest, Chevelle has never been able to recreate the success they had with Wonder What's Next and their hit song, The Red. Their last disc wasn't nearly as innovative or interesting, and, unfortunately, their fourth record doesn't fare much better. Vena Sera is packed with Chevelle's famous Tool-like melodies, heavy riffs, throat-busting vocals and plenty of mildly catchy tracks. Straight Jacket Fashion is one of the better songs here, and its gripping Three Days Grace-style chorus should help this record find its way into the hands of many angst-ridden teens. But the record follows the Tool/3DG formula too closely, leaving barely any room for creativity. There's no question that these guys are solid musicians, but if you're looking for something original for your industrial collection, this isn't it.
Chevelle play the Opera House Wednesday (April 11).
